HTC dropped One S Android 4.2 update over insufficient Qualcomm support Jul 18th 2013, 00:20

HTC confirmed recently that the HTC One S would remain on the current version of Android and HTC Sense without providing any reason as to why, but now a new report claims to have the inside details.

Despite HTC's assurances in February that the HTC One S and other HTC handsets would update to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and the Sense 5 overlay, HTC abruptly dropped the One S from the rollout. Why? Tech website AndroidandMe blames lack of support from Qualcomm.

The HTC One S has two versions: a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 powers one version, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 powers the other. Qualcomm reportedly stopped critical software support for the S3 version, forcing HTC software engineers to choose whether to update the S3 drivers at an expensive cost or cancel the update for both the S3 and S4 variants to prevent confusion.

We obviously know which path HTC chose - if AndroidandMe's source information is correct.

With all that said...the Snapdragon S4-powered HTC One S will now allegedly receive the Android 4.2 update, according to the latest from @LlabTooFeR. Wow. Talk about backtracking.
